Manchester United have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for the signing of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko. The deal is worth €76.5million (£66.4m) plus €8.5m in add-ons. The 22-year-old has permission to travel for medical tests ahead of completing his move.
The Athletic reports that Newcastle United also pursued Sesko, offering up to €85m including bonuses. However, the forward opted for Old Trafford. Despite Newcastle’s Champions League qualification for 2025-26, Sesko favoured United. As a result, negotiations concluded swiftly.
Part of major attacking overhaul
Sesko’s arrival follows United’s acquisitions of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Together, the trio represent a guaranteed spend of nearly £194m, with potential add-ons taking the total well beyond £200m.
The Slovenia international scored 21 goals last season for Leipzig. This adds to a tally of 39 goals and eight assists in 87 appearances since joining from RB Salzburg in 2023. Known for his pace, aerial threat, and powerful finishing, Sesko has drawn comparisons to Erling Haaland. Analysts, however, caution there remains risk in adapting to the Premier League.
Shirt number setback
However, Sesko will not be able to wear his preferred No.30 shirt at United. The number has already been claimed by new signing Diego Leon. Leon is an 18-year-old Paraguayan left-back who impressed in pre-season after joining from Cerro Porteno.
If Sesko wishes to take on the iconic No.9 shirt, he would have to wait for Rasmus Hojlund to depart. United are open to offers of around £40m for the Danish striker. Although, Hojlund has publicly stated his intent to stay and compete for his place.
High expectations at Old Trafford
This is the third time United have targeted Sesko, having monitored him since his breakthrough at NK Domzale in 2019. Standing at 1.95m, Sesko has versatility to score with both feet and his head. The Slovakian will be expected to deliver immediately as United look to justify their significant summer outlay.
