MK Party rejects GNU involvement as the African National Congress (ANC) moves to reset the Government of National Unity (GNU). The ANC’s reset plan aims to broaden the coalition by inviting more parties, including the EFF and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party, to strengthen political stability ahead of the local government elections.
The ANC’s outreach forms part of a broader strategy to create a more inclusive and effective governing structure. Therefore, it believes expanding the GNU could improve coordination, service delivery, and public confidence.
MK Party Rejects GNU Over Leadership and Ideological Issues
However, MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela confirmed the party’s rejection of the ANC’s invitation. He said the MK Party will not join a GNU that includes the DA and President Cyril Ramaphosa. In addition, he argued that such a coalition would undermine the party’s political objectives and its commitment to what it views as genuine transformation.
Furthermore, Ndhlela stated that the GNU’s current composition is incompatible with the MK Party’s vision for South Africa. As a result, working alongside certain parties would contradict its principles.
ANC Continues Outreach Despite Rejection
Although the MK Party rejects GNU participation, the ANC continues its discussions with other political organisations represented in Parliament. Consequently, the governing party’s objective is to ensure the GNU remains cohesive and capable of addressing pressing national challenges.
Moreover, the ANC insists that the reset is not about excluding existing members but about building a broader base of support. It also maintains that leadership of the GNU will remain under ANC control.
Preparing for Local Elections
Meanwhile, the coalition reset comes as South Africa heads towards local government elections. Strengthening alliances and improving service delivery have therefore become top priorities for the ANC. By expanding the GNU, the party hopes to present a united, credible front to the electorate.
In conclusion, as the ANC pushes ahead with its reset, the MK Party rejects GNU membership over irreconcilable differences. The ruling party will now focus on securing other allies to ensure stability before voters go to the polls.
