Tiffany Meek’s murder charge remains under investigation after her appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on 14 July 2025. She faces multiple charges related to the death of her 11 year old son, Jayden-Lee Meek. The court postponed the matter to 18 July for further investigation and a possible bail application.
Child Found Dead Hours After Being Reported Missing
On 13 May 2025, Jayden-Lee failed to return home from school. His school transport dropped him off at the Fleurhof apartment complex, but he never reached his unit. His mother, who was working from home, grew anxious and asked neighbours to help find him.
Together with community leaders, they began searching. By 6:40pm, they reported the matter to police. Officers joined the search later that evening.
At around 6:25am the next morning, a resident found Jayden-Lee lying unconscious and undressed on a staircase near his home. He had bruises and abrasions but no visible blood. Witnesses alleged that his body appeared clean and still warm, suggesting a recent death. Paramedics took him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Arrest and Court Appearance
Gauteng police arrested Tiffany Meek on 11 July. Officers confirmed her identity as the child’s mother and linked her to the investigation. Authorities charged her with murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and crimen injuria, a charge involving the unlawful violation of someone’s dignity.
Meek returned to court three days later. She cried during the proceedings as the charges were presented. Family members attended the hearing, which took place in a tense atmosphere. Prosecutors said they would oppose bail due to the severity of the charges.
The next court hearing is scheduled for 18 July.
Gauteng Education Department’s Response
Following Jayden-Lee’s death, officials from the Gauteng Department of Education visited his school, Laerskool Pieter Malan, to investigate allegations of abuse. The visit aimed to address concerns raised by the community about the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death. The department emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice and accountability, engaging with school staff and community members to gather further details.
Calls for Justice
The Tiffany Meek murder charge has sparked widespread public anger. In May, members of the Women Empowerment Platform (WEP) travelled from Johannesburg to Cape Town to protest outside Parliament. They called for urgent action and accountability in Jayden-Lee’s case.
The group urged the Portfolio Committee on Police to prioritise the investigation. Authorities continue to investigate the case, with further developments expected at the next court appearance.
