Trade union Solidarity has raised serious concerns about the working environment at FlySafair, reporting that a number of its pilot members have resigned due to what the union calls “untenable conditions.” FlySafair pilot working conditions are under scrutiny, according to Solidarity spokesperson Leon Mouton, with long hours, inconsistent scheduling, and limited rest periods leading to growing dissatisfaction among flight crews.

Union Calls for Immediate Intervention

In a statement on Sunday, Solidarity CEO Dr Dirk Hermann urged the airline company to address what he termed an “unsustainable operational model.” He warned that pilot fatigue poses not only a labour issue but a serious safety risk. “Flight safety is directly tied to the wellbeing of pilots and FlySafair pilot working conditions,” Hermann said, emphasising that the airline must act preemptively rather than reactively in considering working conditions.

Airline Yet to Respond

FlySafair, one of South Africa’s largest low-cost carriers, had not issued a public response to the union’s claims by Monday. The airline has recently come under scrutiny for alleged shortcomings in internal communication and fatigue management protocols, which form part of the ongoing debate around FlySafair pilot working conditions.

Broader Industry Tensions Reflected

Solidarity stated it remains committed to supporting efficient airline operations but insists this cannot come at the cost of occupational health. The situation reflects wider labour tensions in South Africa’s aviation sector, where staff shortages and cost pressures continue to challenge airlines, including scrutiny of working conditions.
