South Africans aboard the Gaza-bound aid mission stand strong. They joined a global push to deliver relief to war-torn Gaza. Now detained by Israeli forces, they keep spirits high while release plans advance. DIRCO says the SA Gaza flotilla activists will head home soon.

Who Joined the Aid Mission?

Six South Africans sailed with the Global Sumud Flotilla last month: Nkosi Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela, author Zukiswa Wanner, activist Carrie Shelver, Dr Fatima Hendricks, Zaheera Soomar, and Reaaz Moolla. They travelled among about 500 activists from 47 nations to challenge Israel’s blockade, carrying medical supplies and food for civilians. Crucially, these were indeed SA activists from the Gaza flotilla mission.

On 1 October, Israeli navy forces intercepted 45 boats over 38 hours. The final vessel, Marinette, was stopped 42.5 nautical miles from Gaza, and more than 400 people were detained. President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the operation as a breach of international law and demanded the immediate release of the SA Gaza flotilla participants.

Health Check: Spirits Stay High

A South African team visited detainees at Israel’s Negev Prison on 5 October and found them in good health and “high spirits,” according to DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri. Families back home welcomed the update, which included reassurances about the well-being of the SA Gaza flotilla activists.

Carrie Shelver’s mother, Shelagh, pleaded: “Let them go, just let them go,” echoing nationwide concern.

Road Home: Release Moves Forward

DIRCO remains in contact with Israeli officials and partners. Phiri confirmed the deportation process is at an advanced stage. Israel has discussed routing detainees via Europe, while South Africa is pushing for direct return to home soil. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya acknowledged the talks are complex, noting broader diplomatic tensions, yet progress continues in the efforts to bring the Gaza flotilla activists back safely.

Why It Matters

The SA Gaza flotilla activists sought to spotlight Gaza’s humanitarian emergency. Their detention drew South African and global solidarity. As procedures near completion, attention shifts to their safe return—and to renewed calls for aid access and lasting relief for civilians in Gaza, underscoring the impact of these South African activists.
