President Cyril Ramaphosa could face questions under oath as the Madlanga Commission weighs allegations about policing and political interference. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola’s testimony opened the door to Ramaphosa testimony at Madlanga Commission hearings, which can summon witnesses. Parliament’s parallel inquiry into alleged criminal infiltration of law enforcement may also seek his evidence. The Presidency said it would consider the totality of evidence before responding.

Clash Over KZN Task Team

Masemola said Police Minister Senzo Mchunu ordered the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team on 31 December 2024. He told the commission he raised concerns with Ramaphosa on 1 February 2025 and was later told by Mchunu that the President agreed with the move—an account Masemola doubts, saying Ramaphosa was “taken aback” when briefed. Mchunu has not yet testified. These claims sharpen the focus on Ramaphosa testimony at Madlanga Commission proceedings.

MK Turns Up Pressure

The MK party escalated pressure with a letter demanding clarity on claims that Ramaphosa instructed the deployment of SAPS Special Task Force and National Intervention Unit to protect Richards Bay Minerals. MK wants the legal basis, costs and any Cabinet or parliamentary approvals, warning it will pursue parliamentary and legal avenues if answers do not come. The party frames the issue as a test of governance integrity and the impartial use of state security resources.

What to Watch Next

The commission is in early stages. Testimony from Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya could shift the narrative. For now, the prospect of Ramaphosa testimony at Madlanga Commission hearings grows as competing versions of critical decisions demand clarification.
