The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says the Lucky Montana SARS tax bill stands at more than R55 million and released detailed taxpayer information to “counteract false statements”. SARS cited section 67(5) of the Tax Administration Act to justify the disclosure. It also said Montana submitted a compromise offer of about R5.4 million on 8 August 2025.

Timeline and Court Actions

According to SARS, Montana failed to file several returns and did not supply documents during an audit covering 2009–2019. SARS issued additional assessments, demanded payment, and filed certified statements in 2019 and 2022. It then launched a sequestration application in May 2023. On 21 July 2025, the High Court dismissed Montana’s bid for condonation and granted a punitive costs order, with certain allegations struck from his affidavit. SARS says the assessments have become final because a valid objection was not filed.

Montana’s Response

Montana rejects SARS’s claims. He posted that he does not owe “even a cent” and will address the matter at a press briefing on Monday, 13 October 2025. He has also alleged misconduct by SARS officials, which the tax authority and a prior High Court ruling described as “scandalous and vexatious”.

What to Watch Next

SARS has asked Montana to address legal and formal requirements for any compromise by 14 October 2025. The Lucky Montana SARS tax bill dispute now turns on whether he maintains his denial or engages the compromise route—which requires accepting the debt as due. South Africans will look for concrete answers at his briefing and any further court steps.

Why this Matters

PRASA’s former CEO is now an MK Party MP, and the case tests SARS’s willingness to go public when it believes “false statements” undermine trust. The Lucky Montana SARS tax bill saga raises a broader question: how the tax authority enforces compliance while protecting confidentiality.
