The family of nine-year-old Delft boy Jody Windvogel is pleading for an end to online speculation after his tragic death on Sunday, 16 November 2025. The Grade 3 learner from Delft North Primary School was found in the backyard of his home in The Hague Avenue, Delft. He was later declared dead.

His mother, Judith Windvogel, said she was at home cooking and doing laundry when her son ran outside. Moments later, his brother alerted her that something was wrong. She told Independent Media’s Daily Voice that she does not know what led to the incident and that Jody had not disclosed any bullying to her.

The grieving family is particularly hurt by social media claims that Jody’s mother had left the house to buy alcohol. Judith insists she was at home the entire time. She says people spreading rumours “did not live with us” and do not know her relationship with her children.

Community Support After Jody Windvogel Tragic Death

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened. The circumstances around the nine-year-old’s death on 16 November 2025 are under investigation.

Ward councillor Michelle Adonis said the news had “shaken” the Delft community. Michelle visited Delft North Primary School on Monday and met the principal, teacher and affected pupils. She said a multi-agency support team had already been activated. She has also offered burial assistance to the family through the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Fund for Destitute Burials.

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed Jody’s death and said counselling was being offered to learners and staff. She extended condolences to the family. She urged parents to seek help early if they see warning signs in children.

The Jody Windvogel tragic death has again highlighted the need for accessible mental health support. Hammond pointed parents and schools to the WCED Safe Schools Call Centre at 0800 45 46 47, SADAG’s 24-hour helpline at 0800 12 13 14, and the suicide emergency number 0800 567 567.
