BT Football Academy, a Cape Town-based football institution, is facing intense scrutiny following a disastrous tour to Spain in July 2025. The fallout has led to a fraud investigation and significant internal upheaval. Several coaches reportedly stepped down amid allegations of mismanagement and financial misconduct.

Coach Resignations Amid Spain Tour Fallout

The academy is known for developing young South African football talent. It faced severe backlash after their under-18 team, along with other age groups, were left without means to return home. They had participated in the Donosti Cup in San Sebastian. The incident caused distress to the players and their families. This raised concerns about the academy’s operational integrity.

Fraud Investigation Targets Academy Owner

Grassy Park police are investigating fraud allegations against BT Football Academy owner Brandon Timmy. This follows a parent’s claim that he misled her about flight arrangements and refused to refund payments for a player unable to travel due to a lost passport. Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed the investigation, stating that no arrests have been made. He also mentioned that statements are being collected. The South African Football Association (SAFA) Cape Town is also probing the academy for participating in the FIFA-sanctioned Donosti Cup without proper authorization. This participation potentially violates regulations.

Questions that needs Answers

Parents, who paid approximately R50,000 per player for the trip, reported issues with visa processing, accommodation, and unfulfilled promises about match fixtures. Last-minute flight bookings due to visa delays led to unaffordable return ticket costs. Some parents were asked to pay an additional R15,000 to secure flights home.

Community fundraising efforts, led by figures like Tracey Lange and Avukile Mabombo, raised enough to bring the group back to Cape Town by July 24, 2025. On social media, parents and community members have labeled the tour a “scam.” These labels are amplifying calls for accountability. The BT Academy fraud investigation is expected to deepen as more families come forward. Some families are considering legal action to recover funds.
