BMW is reportedly preparing to launch a rugged off-road model, the BMW G74 SUV. BMW positions it as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, and plans to begin production in the second half of 2029 at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant.

The G74 will reportedly be based on the next-generation BMW X5 platform. Unlike mainstream SUVs, it will serve as a halo model in BMW’s line-up. It is similar to the XM performance SUV but with a focus on all-terrain ability.

XM Replacement and Design Direction

Industry reports suggest the BMW G74 SUV will replace the plug-in hybrid XM. Its production is due to end in November 2028. Insiders cited that the model, codenamed G74, will carry a boxier, more rugged design than the X5. It will offer enhanced off-road capability.

BMW has previously offered an xOffroad package on the X5, with features such as locking differentials, drive modes, and underbody protection. The G74 is expected to expand on these features. It will position itself against established off-roaders like the G-Wagon, Land Rover Defender, and Ineos Grenadier.

BMW’s Response

When approached for comment, BMW declined to confirm the reports. They stated only that it does not comment on speculation regarding future product plans.
