South African Government Concerned Over Rising Israel-Iran Tensions and Safety of Citizens Abroad

Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO)

The South African government has voiced serious concern over the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, warning that further escalation could have grave regional and global consequences.

In a statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), South Africa called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and urged all parties to pursue diplomatic solutions to avoid further instability.

“The South African government is deeply troubled by the worsening hostilities between Israel and Iran,” the statement read. “We call for calm, maximum restraint, and a return to dialogue.”

The conflict, which has flared in recent weeks, has raised fears of broader regional fallout, with the international community closely monitoring developments.

Amid the rising tensions, the South African government also expressed concern for the safety and security of its citizens currently residing or travelling in the region, particularly in Iran. DIRCO confirmed that it is actively engaging with its embassies and diplomatic missions to monitor the situation and provide consular assistance if necessary.

“The safety of South African nationals remains a top priority,” government spokespersons said, adding that contingency plans are being reviewed should the security situation worsen.

South Africa reiterated its long-standing position on the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts through international law and multilateral diplomacy, cautioning that sustained violence would only deepen humanitarian crises and geopolitical instability.
