South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs is transforming passport services with a pioneering passport doorstep delivery initiative for citizens living abroad. As of 1 November 2025, South Africans worldwide can have their passports delivered directly to their door. Consequently, this eliminates the hassle of multiple embassy visits, saving valuable time and effort.

A Game-Changer for South Africans Abroad

Minister Leon Schreiber unveiled the passport doorstep delivery service in The Hague, Netherlands, alongside a new service centre. He described it as a bold reform that promotes inclusivity for South Africans abroad. For instance, the service removes the need to revisit service centres for passport collection, making the process far more efficient.

Fast, Affordable, and Accessible

The service ensures delivery within 24 to 72 hours, with fees ranging from US$30 to US$60 (R522 to R1,043). Moreover, it’s available at 18 Home Affairs service centres in cities like London, Sydney, and Dubai, with plans to expand to France and India. Therefore, South Africans can visit the DHA website for a complete list of locations.

Testing Ground for Future Expansion

Schreiber called the global rollout a testing phase to refine logistics before introducing passport doorstep delivery in South Africa. “We’re working to end long queues and travel,” he stated. As a result, the department plans to partner with banks to extend services locally by 2026, further enhancing accessibility.

A Step Toward Digital Transformation

This initiative aligns with Home Affairs’ vision to make South Africa a leader in digital identity management. For example, new service centres, like the one in The Hague, have already reduced passport processing times from 18 months to five weeks. Thus, this reflects a strong commitment to tech-driven solutions.

Why It Matters

For South Africans abroad, this service delivers unmatched convenience and dignity. Schreiber called it a watershed moment for Home Affairs. Ultimately, the department’s focus on innovation promises a more accessible future for all citizens
