Electricity costs in South Africa are becoming increasingly unaffordable, turning a basic necessity into a luxury, according to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. During a visit to the Matimba power station in Limpopo, the minister expressed deep concern about the growing financial burden electricity places on households across the country.

“Electricity is becoming a luxury item. This is not a metaphorical expression; it is the reality,” Ramokgopa said.

He warned that rising electricity costs in South Africa are not only affecting the poor, but also middle-income families who are struggling to manage their monthly bills.

Middle-income households also under pressure

The minister noted that the cost of electricity is climbing to the point where even middle-class households are feeling the strain of having to pay electricity. Despite existing support measures like Free Basic Electricity (FBE), Ramokgopa said these are not reaching all who need them—especially those in informal settlements without formal connections to the grid.

Government exploring new affordability measures

Ramokgopa confirmed that government is reviewing the current FBE framework and looking at additional mechanisms to improve affordability. One such approach includes implementing differentiated pricing models based on income levels to ensure broader access.

“The issue of affordability is one that government is taking seriously,” he said, reinforcing that energy access is fundamental to restoring dignity and improving quality of life.

As electricity costs in South Africa continue to rise, the urgency to address affordability grows. Ramokgopa emphasised that no South African should be forced to choose between electricity and other essential needs.
