Netflix Film and TV Training Boosts SA Talent

Netflix has launched the Screencraft Pathway Programme in South Africa, a dynamic Netflix film and TV training initiative. Specifically, it equips aspiring filmmakers with hands-on experience in film and TV production. Consequently, the programme aims to nurture local talent and develop skills that meet global industry standards, according to Netflix’s official announcement.

Hands-On Skills Development

In partnership with Dalberg and local training institutions, the Screencraft Pathway Programme targets creatives with prior training or equivalent experience. For instance, participants will engage in comprehensive Netflix film and TV training, covering disciplines such as cinematography, script supervision, location scouting, art direction, and editing.

Moreover, the programme blends classroom learning with mentorship and paid internships on Netflix productions, thereby ensuring practical, real-world application. This structure allows participants to gain insights from industry professionals while working on high-profile projects, fostering both technical expertise and creative confidence.

Ben Amadasun, Netflix Africa’s director of content, stated that the programme seeks to “build a strong, skilled workforce for the local industry.” Since 2017, for example, Netflix’s Grow Creative initiative has trained over 3,000 South Africans. Thus, the Screencraft Pathway expands this ongoing commitment to developing a robust talent pipeline.

Application Process and Future Growth

Furthermore, applications for the Netflix film and TV training programme are open until 31 August 2025. The training starts in October. Netflix plans to make the programme an annual event. Over time, it will increase participant numbers. Additionally, this initiative aligns with Netflix’s recent job openings and production investments in South Africa. This further reinforces its role in fostering local storytelling for a global audience.
