Launched in 2020, Tolokazi Beer is brewed in Soweto using traditional African ingredients like sorghum, rooibos, and hibiscus. As the first woman brewery owner in the country, Nxusani-Mawela is setting a new standard in the craft beer world. Skills, Training, and Transformation
Before launching Tolokazi, Nxusani-Mawela became the first Black woman in South Africa to qualify as a certified brewmaster. She gained industry experience at South African Breweries (SAB) and later launched Brewsters Craft. This facility trains new brewers and provides contract brewing services, helping small businesses enter the market.
Moreover, as the first woman to own a brewery in South Africa, she actively mentors aspiring brewers. She especially supports women and people of colour who often lack access to this space. Her work is central to making the industry more diverse, skilled, and inclusive.
