Twelve SANDF Members Arrested for Kidnapping and Murder of Hawks Officer

Twelve members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Hawks officer Lieutenant Colonel Ngwako Frans Mathipa. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in a case that has gripped the nation for nearly two years.

Mathipa was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in August 2023, shortly after being abducted outside his home in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria North. His body was discovered along the N1 highway near the Hammanskraal Toll Plaza, with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to police sources, Mathipa had been investigating high-level fraud and corruption linked to military procurement deals at the time of his death. His murder raised suspicions of possible involvement by individuals within the country’s security structures.

The arrests follow an intensive investigation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), working alongside other specialised units. The suspects were apprehended last week in various locations across Gauteng. Their arrests come after months of evidence gathering, intelligence work and coordination between different law enforcement agencies.

Details Surrounding the Case

Mathipa, an experienced officer within the Hawks, played a critical role in cracking down on organised crime and corruption, including cases involving the defence force. His murder sent shockwaves through both the police and military communities, highlighting concerns over criminal infiltration within state institutions.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola expressed shock at Mathipa’s killing but commended the swift work of investigators in tracking down those responsible. “We remain committed to rooting out criminal elements, even within law enforcement structures,” Masemola said.

Military and Police Cooperation

The SANDF has confirmed its full cooperation with the police investigation. Defence spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini stated that the military is aware of the arrests and supports the legal process. “The SANDF respects the rule of law and will allow the justice system to take its course,” Dlamini added.

The arrests have reignited public concern over corruption within the defence sector and emphasised the need for accountability at all levels of government and security services.

The twelve suspects are expected to appear in court soon as the investigation continues.
