Volkswagen Recalls Polo and Taigo Models Over Airbag Fault

Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has announced the recall of 144 locally sold vehicles — including 131 Polos and 13 Taigos — due to concerns over a possible defect in the airbag system.

The affected vehicles were manufactured between May 9 and May 26, 2024, and could be equipped with faulty gas generators that may lead to the airbag failing to deploy correctly in the event of a crash.

According to VWSA, the issue stems from a batch of gas generators that may not meet safety specifications. The company emphasised that while no incidents have been reported to date, the recall is a proactive safety measure.

“All affected customers are being contacted directly to arrange free inspections and, if necessary, replacement of the components,” the company said.

Vehicle owners can also check if their car is part of the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on Volkswagen’s official website or by contacting authorised dealerships.

This latest recall underscores growing industry-wide scrutiny around vehicle safety and quality control, especially concerning airbag systems. Volkswagen says it is working swiftly with dealers to ensure all affected vehicles are repaired without delay.

VWSA encouraged all affected owners to act promptly, reiterating its commitment to customer safety and product integrity.
