Max Oliva Steps Down as SPAR SA CEO, Joins McDonald’s

Johannesburg SPAR South Africa CEO Max Oliva is stepping down after a 30-year career with the retail group to take on the role of CEO at McDonald’s South Africa, effective 1 July 2025.

The SPAR Group confirmed Oliva’s departure in a statement this week, noting that group CEO Angelo Swartz will assume operational leadership of the Southern Africa region to ensure a smooth transition.

Oliva’s resignation comes amid a period of renewed strategic focus at SPAR, following its exit from underperforming European markets to concentrate on growth and efficiency within Southern Africa.

“Max leaves behind a remarkable legacy with SPAR and a significant contribution to the local retail sector,” the group said.

Speaking on his departure, Oliva expressed his confidence in the business’s direction: “It has been an honour to serve SPAR for the past three decades. While this was not an easy decision, I know the company is in strong hands. Angelo has my full support, and I look forward to seeing how the team builds on our momentum.”

Angelo Swartz, who was appointed group CEO in October 2023, will now take on an expanded role, overseeing both the group and its South African operations. He is credited with initiating a turnaround strategy focused on reigniting revenue growth, improving operational performance, and bolstering support for SPAR’s network of independent retailers.

“Angelo is a highly experienced leader with deep knowledge of the SPAR business and the Southern African market. His leadership has already delivered meaningful progress, and we are confident in his ability to steer the company forward,” SPAR noted.

The group added that Swartz will continue to lead strategic interventions aimed at strengthening compliance, unlocking value across the supply chain, and restoring operating margins.

Oliva’s move to McDonald’s marks a significant leadership shift for both brands, with industry analysts noting the strategic value he brings to the fast-food giant, given his track record in managing complex retail operations and networks.

With Swartz at the helm and a capable leadership team in place, SPAR says it remains well-positioned to execute its growth strategy and deliver long-term value to stakeholders.
