For the Dlamini family, the moment when Aphile Dlamini wakes from coma marks a rare glimmer of hope after a devastating lift shaft tragedy in Durban’s CBD. Eight-year-old Aphile and her twin brother, Aphelele, fell from the fourth floor to the basement of the Homii residential building on Pixley KaSeme Street on 18 October 2025. Her brother died instantly, while she was placed in a coma.

According to Berea Mail, their father, Khaya Dlamini, said Aphile was to undergo a critical operation. He later confirmed over the weekend that the surgery had been successful. On 15 November 2025, his birthday, he described the news that she was alive, the operation had gone well and she was out of the coma as “no greater gift”.

The case has already drawn national attention. Protesters previously marched through the Durban CBD demanding justice from the Homii Lifestyle Apartment management following the fall. Residents and supporters say this has exposed serious safety concerns at the building.

While Aphile Dlamini wakes from coma, the family’s fight over what happened inside the Homii building is intensifying. TimesLIVE reports that she had been in a coma since 18 October, when the twins fell down the lift shaft.

Addressing hundreds of supporters in the Durban CBD earlier this month, Khaya Dlamini vowed not to give up until he received answers from Homii Lifestyle management and the police. He alleged the building had no warning signage or safety measures indicating the lift was not working. He claimed CCTV footage of the incident was being withheld. Furthermore, he accused the company of “tampering with evidence” by locking the lift doors and boarding up the basement entrance.

In a statement cited by both outlets, Dlamini said the family “extends heartfelt gratitude to all South Africans” for their support. He confirmed that “the matter is now being handled through formal legal channels”. He also requested privacy, saying the family would not take part in further media interviews. They wish to grieve and focus on their daughter’s recovery.

Homii Lifestyle Responds as Investigation Proceeds

Homii Lifestyle confirmed the incident but said it could not provide further details because the case is now a legal matter. The company extended condolences to the family and said the safety and wellbeing of residents “remain our priority”. An investigation is under way. The company added that it is cooperating with the relevant authorities and remains in contact with the Dlaminis. It is willing to offer counselling and emotional support to those affected.
