The Graham Howes body found update came on Monday, 8 September, after an intensive operation off Bloubergstrand. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed that a local motor yacht helping the search located and recovered the 38-year-old kite surfer at sea. Earlier on Monday morning, crews had already recovered his kite-surf sail and board in the search area.
Last Seen off Eden on the Bay
Howes, an experienced kiteboarder from Bloubergstrand, was last seen shortly after 13h00 on Sunday offshore of Eden on the Bay. When he did not return home by late afternoon, the alarm went out and responders launched the first search operation just before 20h00, continuing through the early hours of Monday. CCTV footage from local security cameras also placed him offshore after 13h00 on Sunday, said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
Massive Multi-Agency Effort
NSRI rescue craft from Melkbosstrand, Table Bay and Yzerfontein deployed alongside shoreline patrols, while an EMS Metro Rescue drone unit conducted infrared aerial sweeps. SAPS, the City of Cape Town’s water rescue network and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre coordinated efforts as grids widened from Blouberg towards Robben Island, Bokpunt, Yzerfontein and Dassen Island. The NSRI commended the “extensive efforts by all involved” that helped bring closure.
Family Requests Privacy; Investigation Proceeds
Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services have taken Howes’ body into their care. SAPS has opened an investigation, with “all possibilities” under review, according to the NSRI. Howes’ family has respectfully requested privacy during this time. The NSRI conveyed condolences to his loved ones.
Community Support Mattered
From the first shoreline alerts to the final recovery at sea, community volunteers and private vessels played a crucial role. The confirmation that the Graham Howes body found brings closure followed a coordinated response across air, land and sea—an effort the NSRI and authorities publicly praised.
