Son Heung-min has joined Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in a landmark $26.5 million deal. As a result, this move sets a new Majour League Soccer (MLS) transfer record. It also brings an end to his decade-long run at Tottenham Hotspur.
During his time at Spurs, Son became a fan favourite. He scored 173 goals in 454 appearances. Furthermore, he captained the squad in his final season, solidifying his status as a club legend.
From London to LA: A Dream Realized
At BMO Stadium, LAFC gave Son a hero’s welcome. Fans, officials, and staff gathered to celebrate his arrival. Son called the move a dream come true.
In his words, “LA is such an exciting city. I’m here to win and entertain.”
Initially, Son had no plans to leave Europe. However, LAFC’s general manager, John Thorrington, changed his thinking. According to Son, Thorrington appealed to both his heart and ambition. That was enough to make him reconsider.
Leaving Behind a Legacy at Tottenham
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy expressed deep admiration for Son. He described him as loyal, impactful, and forever part of the Spurs family. Son’s final achievement with the club came in this year. Helping Tottenham lift the Europa League trophy, ending a 17-year wait for silverware.
LAFC Looks to The Future with Son
Los Angeles is home to a large Korean community. Therefore, Son’s arrival holds both cultural and sporting importance. While LAFC has signed global stars before, like Gareth Bale and Carlos Vela, Son brings a different edge. Not only is he still in top form, but he’s also focused on mentoring young players.
In fact, Son explained that helping the next generation is one of his main reasons for joining LAFC. He wants to guide others while competing at a high level.
Eyes on The Debut
LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference. Although no debut date has been confirmed, fans are already counting down. Son could appear as early as the next match against Chicago Fire.
