On the evening of July 28, 2025, a lone gunman opened fire in an office tower at 345 Park Avenue, Midtown Manhattan. A mass shooting kills four, including off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam. Another person was critically injured before the shooter died by suicide, according to police reports and multiple sources.

Victims and Timeline

The attacker, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, drove across the U.S. He arrived in New York earlier that day. In the mass shooting that kills four, he double-parked a BMW outside the building at around 6:30 p.m. and began shooting in the lobby. Officer Islam—a married father of two with another child on the way—and several civilians were fatally wounded. Among the civilians was a Blackstone executive. Police say a staff member from the NFL was critically injured and remains in stable condition.

Shooter’s Background and Motive

Tamura had a documented history of mental illness but was not previously known to the FBI. He legally owned firearms in Nevada. Authorities found another weapon, ammunition, a rifle case, backpack, and prescribed medication in his vehicle. Reports indicate a suicide note expressed anger toward the NFL over concussion management. The note requested that his brain be studied for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). However, investigators have not confirmed the motive officially.

Response and Investigation

Law enforcement secured the building following the mass shooting that kills four. The FBI joined with the NYPD in a full criminal investigation. New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch publicly condemned the attack. They praised first responders’ bravery. The building, owned by Rudin Management and housing tenants such as Blackstone, KPMG, the NFL, and Deutsche Bank, was evacuated amid panic and fear.

Context Amid Low Violence Levels

The incident, in which a mass shooting kills four, comes in a year when New York City has experienced record-low levels of shooting victims. In the first half of 2025, shooting victims dropped to the lowest number ever recorded in city history. There was a 24 percent year-on-year decline compared to the same period in 2024.
