July 24 marks International Tequila Day, a global celebration of one of the world’s most iconic and spirited beverages. Whether it’s sipped slowly, tossed back with lime and salt, or mixed into a perfectly chilled margarita, tequila is a staple of celebration.

Originating in the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, this agave-based liquor has grown from a traditional Mexican drink to a global favourite. In South Africa, tequila is especially popular at parties, nightclubs, and festive occasions, often served as the go-to shot or base for bold cocktails.

More than Just a party Drink

While tequila is often associated with late nights and celebrations, it also has a rich cultural heritage. True tequila is produced only in designated regions of Mexico and must be made from 100% blue agave. Premium varieties—like reposado and añejo—are aged to develop complex, smoky flavours perfect for sipping.

In recent years, tequila has enjoyed a rise in popularity among connoisseurs, with many exploring small-batch and artisanal brands.

How Will You Celebrate?

Whether you’re clinking glasses over tacos or trying a new cocktail recipe at home, today is a great excuse to raise a toast (responsibly, of course). Don’t forget to tag your tequila crew and share your favourite way to enjoy it!
